This course is an in-depth and intimate collection of 5 workshops, and 5 supervised analog studio/lab sessions with up to 400' Kodak Tri-X Reversal B&W 16mm film per participant, 300' of Orwo Pf2 print film, and all required processing chemistry provided. The course takes place over 5 sessions, on Sundays between 22 Jan and 26 Mar - with each session lasting 5 hours.

Participants will be trained in:

The basics of how to properly expose 16mm motion picture film with a Bolex camera in natural light using either a Sekonic or Luna light meter.

How to safely hand process b/w camera film using a LOMO developing tank.

How to use a Steenbeck for analog editing.

How to use a JK optical printer for blow-ups, reductions and motion effects in addition to basic shot editing.

How to digitally prepare a sound track and photograph a 16mm optical track using an Auricon camera.

How to use a Bell and Howell C-Printer to create a married print with picture and optical sound.

As all these processes are required to create a 16mm married film print, participants are expected to participate in all workshops and follow through with their own independent project (either on film or digitally) to be completed at the end of the workshop series.

Use of Cineworks facilities and equipment will be available to participants outside of workshop hours to allow them to practice learned skills and apply them to their project.

The Film and Media Showcase is a public forum for members of Cineworks, WIFTV and DOC BC. It provides filmmakers with an opportunity to share their work with other artists and the public, across genres and in a variety of lengths, in a space dedicated to discovery, discussion and inspiration. Each screening will be followed by a question and answer session with creators, with informal conversation and networking afterwards.

In a world teetering on the edge of self destruction, award-winning filmmaker Velcrow Ripper sets out on a unique pilgrimmage. Visiting the 'Ground Zeros' of the planet, he asks if it's possible to find hope in the darkest moments of human history. Staring directly into the face of war, tragedy and instability, Ripper travels to the minefields of Cambodia; war-torn Afghanistan; the toxic wasteland of Bhopal; post-9/11 New York; Bosnia; Hiroshima, Israel and Palestine. Cari Green is an innovative film and television producer with over twenty-five years experience in documentary films, dramatic features and television series, and a solid background in distribution, sales and marketing. Green has produced over 20 award-winning productions, including ScaredSacred, winner of the Special Jury Prize at the 2004 Toronto International Film Festival, as well as The Corporation, an international theatrical hit feature. Green has produced the works of renowned Canadian, International and leading First Nations filmmakers.

Velcrow Ripper is a Canadian Academy Award (Genie) winning filmmaker, writer, web artist, and sound designer. He has directed over thirty films and videos, both fiction and issue-oriented documentary, often with an experimental edge. He creates powerful, cinematic documentaries that deal with the central issues of our times. Since his earliest documentary in 1979, Iran the Crisis, Velcrow has recognized the power of film to explore and express issues of social concern.

Lead and Follow (inspired by a true story) sees Jamie through the evening that ends her marriage. This film is about unexpected connections, vulnerability, and learning to take the lead.

Krista Rand is an actor and producer, who, in the recent years has quickly added writing to her body of work. She produced an award winning Web Series that went on to screen internationally. Her short film Lead & Follow won Storyhive Season One and is inspired by Krista’s true story, focusing in on a night that changed her life. As a producer she's worked on David Ray's feature film Grand Unified Theory which has been invited to 7 film festival including the Beijing International Film Festival and Whistler Film Festival. Krista was also a co-producer on Aubrey Arnason's short film Kindergarten, Da Bin Ich Wieder, which won Crazy 8's 2015 and Producer on Alexz Johnson's music video Heart Like That which can be seen on Storyhive and Telus Optik.

A presentation and Q&A on personal tax accounting for independent filmmakers and media artists, by Sherrill Sirrs Inc.

This two-hour workshop will cover essential details of record-keeping, form filling and smart accountancy for DIY accounts, bookkeepers and accountants, describing important differences in approach. A 30 minute presentation will be followed by in-depth Q&A.

A reading group organized by Western Front, Cineworks and VIVO, focused on intelligent writing about media, media art and the surrounding concepts and frameworks of the mediated world. This project is a collaborative group discussion that is open to suggestions and diversions, aiming to build stronger community ties and knowledge in our field. The text to speech notion draws from the successful format of other close reading groups, and we will facilitate group reading, discussion, and participation. Prior reading of a given text is encouraged but not required, as all sessions will involve some form of introduction, and some portion of close reading (out loud).

Cornelia Vismann, Cultural Techniques and Sovereignty (2010)

First published in 2010, Cornelia Vismann’s article has already attained the status of a classic. In a formulation inspired by linguistic theory, the author argues that the relation between cultural techniques and media can be understood in analogy to grammatical operations. Thus, cultural techniques define the agency of media and execute the procedural rules which the latter set in place. Together, they articulate a critique of subjectivity and sovereignty that proceeds by re-examining the notion of ‘culture’ via its agricultural origins to the current moment when the ‘preservation of cultural techniques’ has entered legal and academic discourse.

The alchemical nature and serendipity of the handmade image are explored in this immersive how-to of hand-brewed emulsion.

In this two-day workshop a simple raw low ISO black and white film stock suitable for contact printing will be created, using three key ingredients in the production of a silver based emulsion: gelatin, potassium bromide, and silver nitrate. A basic chemistry lesson will be provided to introduce the essential make-up of film emulsion, followed by a discussion of technique including a contextual screening of examples, and the creation of the emulsion in a darkroom.

A variety of application methods are explored including dipping, painting and rolling, followed by contact printing, hand processing, and assessing the results. The workshop is aimed at both experienced practitioners and beginners, and includes all clear film stock, chemistry, and supplies. It is also recommended that you bring small objects of 16mm width or less and filmstrips for photogramming onto the emulsion.

No prior experience necessary.

Alex MacKenzie is a Vancouver-based media artist working primarily with 16mm analog film equipment and hand processed imagery. He creates works of expanded cinema, light projection installation, and projector performance. His work has screened at the Rotterdam International Film Festival, the EXiS Experimental Film Festival in Seoul, Lightcone in Paris, Kino Arsenal in Berlin and many other festivals and art spaces worldwide. Alex was the founder and curator of the Edison Electric Gallery of Moving Images, the Blinding Light!! Cinema and the Vancouver Underground Film Festival. He has been an artist in residence at Atelier MTK in Grenobles France, the Struts Gallery/Faucet Media in New Brunswick, Cineworks’ Analog Film Annex in Vancouver and Daimon in Gatineau. Alex co-edited Damp: Contemporary Vancouver Media Art (Anvil Press 2008), and interviewed David Rimmer for Loop, Print, Fade + Flicker: David Rimmer's Moving Images (Anvil Press 2009). He is a founding member of Iris Film Collective.

How to Volunteer at Cineworks

Volunteering at Cineworks is a great opportunity to connect with like-minded people in Vancouver’s media arts community. Members and non-members alike are welcome to volunteer, although privilege will be given to current members in good standing. Please visit our Cast/Crew/Wanted Ads section if you are looking specifically for on set experience.

Cineworks is a member-driven organization and runs on its core of amazing volunteers. All current members are expected to volunteer a minimum of 10 hours per year as part of your membership duties.


The Annex Production Facility

Located in Vancouver’s Railtown District in the historic Ironworks Building, Cineworks Annex is an analogue studio specializing in celluloid cinematic practices. The Annex is a communal studio space that is home to our past Local Artists in Residences and houses a dark room, optical printing, Steenbeck flatbed editor, film processing/printing facilities, and an animation stand.

We recommend doing an orientation for those interested in learning more about the Annex. It is a mandatory step before using the facilities.
